I've been to Damascus 2 years ago and as far as I can remember everything seemed cheap.. it sounds expensive in syrian pounds, but when you calculate in euros or dollars it seems a bargain. a cup of coffee is like 50 eurocents, a litre of bottled water about the same a beer 1 euro a swarma sandwich again about 50 eurocents.. so you can go there on quite a small budget and afford a lot ..
